SUMMARY:TR ELEM - Hagood Mill Native American Day
DESCRIPTION:Come learn with us at Hagood Mill. \nPlease arrive at by 9:45 at the latest to sign a waiver/use the restroom and get assigned into your group\, so we can start promptly at 10 am with our first station. It’s a large group\, so arriving early gives plenty of time to get everyone settled.\nFeel free to bring a packed lunch and stay and enjoy the areas of Hagood Mill that you may not been able to see/experience (especially the cabins). \n$12 per student (5 and older) and adult chaperones are free.\nChildren 4 and under/tag along younger siblings are free with a paid sibling.\nIf you are ONLY bringing yourself and a 4 year old to learn\, please purchase a student ticket for that 4-year-old. If you’re purchasing other student tickets\, you may bring a 4-year-old at no charge. \nOur group will be split into four groups and we will rotate through four learning stations (see below).\nThis is will Native American Focus\, in case you have attended before\, there will be some new stations from last visit. \nThey do have a mill that has a shop that sells fresh ground corn meal and other items\, so you can prepare to support them in that way as well. \nExcited to learn and experience history up close\, while building community with our UHC family. \nStations:\n1. Native American Petroglyphs: Inside the Hagood Creek Petroglyph Site\, students will see over 30 ancient carvings\, as well as a collection of portable petroglyphs that provide insight into early Native American culture. Native American artifacts and art are also on display for students to view.\n2. From Trails to Roads: Students will walk along part of an ancient Native American trail on the mill site that was used by early travelers on foot and later by early automobiles. Comparisons are made between animal and human trails and some of the well-known roads of the Upstate that developed during the 1800s.\n3. Traditional Native American Games: Students will engage in games played by Native American tribes\, learning their cultural significance and the skills they helped develop.\n4. Native American Life in the Upcountry: Students will learn about indigenous survival skills used by Native Americans such as hunting with bows and arrows\, the use of river cane\, making dugout canoes\, and starting a fire. Examples and demonstrations of techniques and primitive tools will provide a unique experience to better understand aspects of Native American life.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at Sandy Flat Quarry for an educational quarry tour designed for homeschool students and families. Participants will enjoy an overlook tour of the quarry pit and learn how we safely extract and process rock through drilling\, blasting\, crushing\, and screening operations to produce aggregates used in roads\, buildings\, and other important infrastructure projects. The tour will also highlight environmental stewardship practices\, including land\, water\, and air quality protection associated with modern mining operations. \nBagged Lunches (4 years old and older) will be provided at no cost. Children under 4 may share a lunch with a parent or sibling. Please note\, this is not a great field trip for small children\, so you may want to make arrangements for them if at all possible. \nClosed Toe shoes are required for safety. \nSignup deadline is October 27 at 11:30pm.

The State Museum is located along the banks of the Congaree River in downtown Columbia\, South Carolina. \nWe will meet & go through the museum at our own pace. DESCRIPTION:Come learn about how our town stays safe as we visit the Travelers Rest Police and Fire Departments. \nWe will split into two groups and spend about 45 min in each department. \nBring your questions and be prepared to learn all about our police officers and fire fighters jobs. \nPlease have your child write a thank you note to bring along\, and if possible bring a baked good as a thank you for their time. \nLet’s show some appreciation for our hard working local community helpers. \nPlease do not sign up babies and toddlers. Signup deadline is December 1 at 11:30pm.
