DESCRIPTION:Get ready for an exciting project day for our Middle School (6th – 8th grade) students!  Students can look forward to various project based learning all centered around the theme “Under the Sea!”.  Students will rotate through 4 classes with 4 different teachers.  As part of their project day\, students will also have snack/break and lunch.   \nWhen:  Wednesday\, April 9th\, 2025 \nTime:  9:10- 2:35pm.  You may drop off your student at Grace Church  through the regular carline beginning at 8:45.  Students will be checked at the top of the North stairs  and put in their assigned group for the day.   \nCost:  $20 per student \nWhere:  Middle School Project Day for students in 6th – 8th grades will be held at UHC’s Grace Church campus. \nWhat to Bring:  \nA backpack with the following: \n\n\n\nUHC ID  \nWater Bottle\nSnack\nLunch\nPencil\nCalculator\nRuler or measuring tape\nHole punches (handheld)\nScissors\nHot glue gun with extra glue sticks (IF POSSIBLE)\n\n\n\nSign Ups:  THIS EVENT IS NOW FULL.   \nCancellations:  If you need to cancel your student’s registration for any reason\, please contact Karla Partin.  Refunds are available up until Friday\, April 5th at 12:00pm.  After that date and time\, no refunds will be issued for any reason. \n\nClasses:   \nEcology and Engineering-Animal Rescue– taught by Carolyn Collett \n\nOverview: Student teams will be assigned a task in which they will examine the needs of wildlife rehabilitation and rescue. Students will design prosthetic solutions for the injured animals.\nMaterials Needed: pencil\, calculator\, ruler or measuring tape\, hot glue gun with extra glue sticks\, hole punches (handheld)\, scissors\n\nUnder the Sea Legos- taught by Maddie Carter \n\nOverview:  Students will design a robot to either rescue a hurt animal from the sea or to clean up the ocean floor.  They will use the Technological Design process to plan\, build and test while using the Lego Spike Prime kits.\nMaterials Needed: none\n\nInvertebrates in the Sea- taught by Anna Humphries \n\nOverview:  Students will learn about different kinds of underwater invertebrates and also review how oil and water don’t mix (in the ocean and also in art!) Then using oil pastel and watercolor\, we will create a resist painting. Students may choose among an octopus\, squid\, or jellyfish.\nMaterials needed: none\n\nOcean Chemistry-  taught by Meredith Landis \n\n\n\nOverview:  Students will explore the effects of salinity on buoyancy and the effects of Carbon Dioxide on the acidity of seawater through hands-on Chemistry experiments.  They will show their results through illustrations and labels. \nMaterials Needed: Pencils\n\n\n\nUnfortunately\, this event is now FULL!  You may add your students to the waitlist below if you’d like to.  If a spot becomes available\, you will be contacted and can register and pay at that time.

The students will explore all aspects of turtles from their history\, life cycle\, habitats\, and role in the ocean biome. By the end of the class\, students will be turtle experts and will even bring home some terrific turtle artwork!\n\n  \nTHE OCEAN DEEP– taught by Mrs. Lesley Fox \n\nOverview:  Have you ever wondered about the deepest parts of our ocean and the mysterious creatures that thrive in the darkness?  If you have\, then come join Mrs. Fox as we discover what really lies beneath and how these deep-sea creatures survive in the immense water pressure.  As a group\, we’ll build small pressure chambers and then you’ll create your own bioluminescent sea creature.\n\n  \nGILLS\, SCALES\, & SLIME!– taught by Mrs. Deborah Hellier \n\nOverview:  How do fish breathe? How do fish sink and float? In this class students will investigate some of the unique features of fish and learn the answers to these questions and more through hands-on experiments and will come home with some fishy artwork!\n\n  \nDIVE INTO THE DEEP SEA:  SEA MONSTER VS REAL SEA CREATURES! – taught by Mrs. DeAnna Shegda \n\nOverview: Are colossal krakens lurking in the abyssal depths? Did giant serpents once terrorize ancient mariners? In this exciting science class\, we’ll plunge into the fascinating world where myth meets marine biology! We’ll explore the captivating tales of legendary sea monsters\, from monstrous squids to fearsome leviathans\, and then compare them to the incredible diversity of real creatures that inhabit our oceans.Through engaging activities\, hands-on experiments\, and captivating visuals\, students will develop their scientific inquiry skills as they investigate the evidence behind these legendary beasts. We’ll learn about the adaptations\, behaviors\, and habitats of real sea creatures that may have inspired these myths\, uncovering the scientific explanations behind some truly amazing phenomena.\n\n

There are bragging rights to be won\, laughs to share\, and memories to be made!  \nSign your K3-5th grade student up for Field Day being held on Thursday\, April 17th on the front lawn at Hampton Heights.  \n\nGreen Cedar & Red Oak Field Day will be held from 9:30-11:30 am. Sign up below!\n\nNote:  If your family has students in both one and two day models\, please feel free to sign up all of your Elementary children for whichever one field day event you prefer so you don’t have to come twice.  You can just pick a class for your students to join if they are not part of that model usually. \nNEW this year:  a Bubble Foam machine will be one of the field day stations! \nBe sure to bring camping chairs\, picnic blankets\, water bottles\, change of clothes (optional) and sunscreen. Parents should remain onsite for the entire event until closing ceremonies.  We need parents to help lead the student groups from station to station\, check in students\, etc!  Please indicate if you can assist with these types of things on your sign up!  \nStudents should wear their UHC CLASS T-SHIRT and as much of their class colors (green cedar\, red oak\, yellow birch\, blue spruce) as possible! IEW’s founder\, Andrew Pudewa\, introduces the Teaching Writing: Structure and Style method of teaching writing briefly covering the nine units of structure and introducing several stylistic techniques. Participants will gain insight into why this method is so effective in teaching even the most reluctant writer. To register for this event you need to please visit the initial meeting page on August 13 and reserve your ticket** \nStudents build exciting models using WeDo LEGO® kit featuring working motors\, gears\, pulleys\, and sensors\, connect them to a computer\, and use an icon-based software program to create and control the robot’s behavior. Classes promote basic physical and computer science concepts\, develop creative problem solving\, collaboration of ideas\, and teamwork. \n\nIn August we will build and program robots that have gears and pulleys! SUMMARY:Google Apps & Digital Technology Workshop for 5th-8th Graders
DESCRIPTION:This workshop meets five times and will focus on teaching digital basics through everyday problem-solving. We will use a curriculum developed by Google Education experts that equips your students with practical tech skills\, including how to understand Google Drive storage and organization\, make digital presentations\, do online research\, work with spreadsheets\, and more. We live in a world surrounded by technology and we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults\, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on understanding how to use technology effectively. This workshop will also teach your student to use the Jupiter Grades system to find assignments\, create and upload files to teachers\, use Google apps for IEW\, presentations\, and more!
