SUMMARY:Creative Writing ….for High School Students
DESCRIPTION:Date: Monday\, July 10–Thursday\, July 13\, 2023 \nTime: 9:00AM-12:00pm \nPlace: UHC Room # 224 \nInstructor: Cindi Myers \nCost: $80.00 per student payable to Cindi Myers at first class.  \nAre you a natural-born storyteller? Do you enjoy creative writing? Or would you like to learn how to write a story? Or polish a story that you have been working on? If you answered yes to any or all these questions\, then this summer class is for you. I will walk students through what makes a story stand out\, how to create a compelling scene\, what are industry standards for fiction stories\, and other key details of writing a fiction story. We will interview a character or two and talk about emotions in writing. There will be creative writing assignments. Fun discussions. Group challenges. And in the process\, we will talk about all the major aspects of creating a story that others will want to read. \nA lifelong love affair with the Bible\, combined with the gift of storytelling\, led Cindi to explore the what-ifs of Bible stories. Using a unique point-of-view\, she invites readers to step into the daily lives of well-known Bible characters. \nCindi has a Bachelor of Science from Palm Beach Atlantic University in Biblical counseling\, which helps her understand the personhood of her characters. Her Master of Education from Jones International University honed her writing skills. And a Master of Biblical Studies from Luther Rice University fed her passion for bringing the Bible to life. \nCindi has published non-fiction\, The Fight for Your Spiritual Life\, which explores Spiritual Warfare\, and a fiction novella\, The Choice\, which looks at the fall of Lucifer and the creation of Adam and Eve. The Longing\, her first novel\, is currently being reviewed by a publisher. The Challenge\, another novel\, retells the story of Job from the eyes of a door greeting Angel is in the editing stage.

SUMMARY:SAT Math Prep Summer Course
DESCRIPTION:Date: Monday\, July 10-Thursday\, July 13\, 2023 \nTime: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM  \nLocation: UHC\, Room # 218 \nInstructor: Laura Erwin \nCost: $75 per student\, bring to first day of workshop \nThis course is intended to help prepare high school students to take the SAT\, focusing primarily on the Math portions. I will also talk about some test-taking strategies that apply to the Reading\, Writing\, and Essay portions as well. Most of the skills we work on will also be used on the PSAT\, which is given in October each year. Students who will be juniors this Fall should not take the PSAT without some preparation. \nThere will be no textbook for this course. There will be numerous handouts given\, and we will use one of the Official Practice Tests from the College Board site for many of our example problems. Instructions will be sent to registered students as to exactly which pages need to be printed and brought to class. \nThere will be no homework assigned\, but students are expected to bring an SAT-approved scientific calculator to each class\, and to work through the problems as they are presented. We will also review and practice techniques for solving problems without a calculator because one section of the test does not permit calculators. \nFor questions concerning this workshop\, please contact the facilitator\, Laura Erwin:  HSMom3Boys@aol.com \nMessage from the teacher: \nI homeschooled my three sons for a total of 20 years. I earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering  from San Jose State University. I have spent much of the past 30+ years teaching and tutoring\, including 15 years at the Upstate Homeschool Co-op.  I am passionate about helping students to see our great God’s hand in all of His creation\, including Math and Science principles. I find it especially delightful to see a student’s eyes light up with one of those “aha!” moments\, when a difficult concept finally clicks. I am also available to parents\, to help them learn to better teach their students.  ~Laura Erwin
