SUMMARY:GVL MS - Ice Skating Field Trip at The Pavilion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun-filled middle school field trip to The Pavilion! Students will have the opportunity to learn about the ice rink and how it operates\, followed by open skate from 11:30 AM–1:00 PM. \nPlease note the following details: \n-Tickets: $12.78 – The price is per child. Please purchase a ticket for your child only. (Adults are free unless you wish to skate)\n-Lunch: You can pack a lunch for your child or you can purchase a lunch ticket for $5.25 which includes 2 slices of thin crust pizza (cheese or pepperoni)\, chips\, and a drink.\n-Drop off/Pick up: This is a drop-off event for middle schoolers ONLY. Please arrive promptly as the tour will run on a tight schedule. A parent must sign the child in with a chaperone inside the lobby. Pick up will be promptly at 1:00pm inside the lobby. Please bring your UHC car tag for pick up.\n-What to bring: Socks\, gloves\, light jacket and lunch if you want to pack your own.\n-Chaperones needed: We need a minimum of 5 parent chaperones to help make this event a success! If you are interested in chaperoning\, please sign up. \nSign up deadline is November 10. \nFeel free to opt your child out of the open skate portion of the field trip and you can pick them up early at 11:15. Please note that early pick up will not change the price of the ticket. \nWe’re looking forward to a fun day of learning\, skating\, and spending time together! ❄️ \nHere’s a field trip description from The Pavilion: \nRink Logistics\nStudents learn about the dimensions of the skating rink surface and how rinks are constructed. This will include:\n-Instruction on the types of glass that are allowed for the upper part of the barrier\n-Instruction on the types of plastic used for the lower boards\n-How the paint is applied for distinguishing marks underneath the ice\n-Other logistical components.\n-Thermometer And Snowflake Icon\n-Ice and Floor Refrigeration\n-Due to the warm conditions of the Upstate\, many people in our area wonder how we make and develop the ice for our rink. Students learn how the ice is formed with thousands of gallons of water. \nThe Zamboni\nEveryone loves watching this machine resurface the ice. In this section of the tour\, students are instructed on how the Zamboni functions to maintain the ice. The Pavilion instructor demonstrates how the ice surface is maintained by checking the temperature of the ice\, the depth of the ice in various areas\, and resurfacing the ice. \nSkate Sharpening\nAs the tour continues\, students learn about different components of ice skating. They learn about the steel blade construction of skates and how the blades are maintained through sharpening. Our expert Sharpener explains how the thin blades have hollows\, rockers\, and edges which allow skaters to balance and turn on the ice. He will also demonstrate how the grinding wheel precisely cuts into the blade to create a fresh hollow for sharpening.
