Course Description

This Spanish 1 course will cover the basics of the Spanish language, with an emphasis on communicative skills (listening comprehension, reading, writing, and speaking). Cultural information is integrated into the lessons to help students gain an understanding of Spanish-speaking communities and countries. Specific topics covered include greetings, the alphabet and pronunciation, days of the week, months of the year, colors, describing yourself and others, discussing likes and dislikes, telling time, talking about your school schedule, school subjects and supplies, describing your family members, foods and drinks, expressing wants, needs, and preferences, shopping vocabulary, transportation and places in town, discussing your home, furniture and chores, talking about sports, parts of the body, and more. This is a fast-paced course designed to provide an overview of the most common vocabulary and basic grammar structures needed for everyday conversation.

This Spanish 2 course builds upon the foundations established in Spanish 1, further developing students’ language proficiency, with an emphasis on the communicative skills of listening and reading comprehension, speaking, and writing. Cultural information is integrated into the lessons to provide students with an understanding of Spanish-speaking communities and countries. Specific grammar topics covered include a review of the present tense, the preterite and imperfect tenses, indirect and direct object pronouns, reflexive verbs, the present progressive, formal and informal commands, the subjunctive mood, and the future tense. Vocabulary that will be covered include airport and travel, sports and health, vocabulary related to storytelling and Mexican legends, food preparation, ordering food at a restaurant, describing extended family members, and careers and professions. It is a fast-paced course with the continued emphasis of communication in Spanish.
