English w/American Literature Honors SPT
Course Description
Welcome to the adventure of American literature! This English class will expose the students to different styles, genres, and forms of literature. Students will do the reading outside of class. In class we will discuss the material, complete different types of activities, and complete assessments on each text.
To be successful in this class:
Students must have good time management skills, be able to organize material and complete assignments turning them in on time.
Students will be expected to be able to maintain a rigorous reading schedule, come to class prepared, take an active part in classroom discussions; write responses to material read; and pass tests and quizzes that cover the material discussed and read.
Grades: 9th Grade, 10th Grade, 11th Grade, 12th Grade

Parents must read UHC High School Literature Class Parent Information before registering their student for a literature class at UHC.
Course Credit: 1 English (honors)

- Short Stories: Rip Van Winkle and Maddened by Mystery by Stephen Leacock (Maddened provided by teacher).
- Brave Companions: Portraits in History David McCullough (Will read two or three stories from the book).
- Poems: Scott Cairns and Anne Ridler (provided by teacher)
Every student in grades 7-12 taking a Literature class at UHC must have access to the Blue Book of Grammar. You can download a free pdf or purchase a hardcopy. You will only need to download or purchase this book once, and your student will use it as a reference for all UHC Literature classes.
The editions referenced are not required as long as the student’s edition is unabridged.
Students taking the class for honors will:
- Complete additional honors work incorporated into class assignments (for example, extra test questions, a leadership role in group activities, and or extra packet for poetry and short story sections of the course).
- Complete two additional assignments per semester, for a total of four per year.
The two additional assignments per semester, one assignment must include reading one additional book from the honors list with its required project/presentations (fall) or essay (spring).
The other required assignment per semester may be on one of the following:
- Field Trip and reflection essay.
- An additional book from the list and a three paragraph reflection essay.
- An assignment chosen from the Minor Project list.
- Specific assignments and details for honors work will be provided by the teacher.
