Biology w/lab Honors GVL

Course Description

Topics this course covers will cover include: the Science of Life, Chemistry of Life, Cell, Cellular Energy, DNA, Cell Cycle, Genetics, Evolution (part scientific theory and part unconfirmed hypothesis), Ecology, Invertebrates and Vertebrate. The students will complete at least 16 labs including dissection of an earthworm, crayfish, perch, and frog. One research paper will be required during the course of the year.

To be successful in this class:

Students will need to manage three to five hours of reading and study time, be able to learn and communicate their knowledge of material on tests, turn in assignments in a timely manner, and follow directions during lab activities.

Parents will be asked to: Monitor their child’s progress. Help them at home if they need help with organization, motivation, studying, and clarification of assignments. Encourage them to interact with other students and teachers respectfully and in a self-advocating way. Check the student’s study guide answers with the answers in the solutions manual and proctor tests to ensure they are taken fairly.

Grades: 9th Grade, 10th Grade

Fees: $465 plus $30 lab fee

Course Credit: 1 lab science (honors)

Honors Addendum Summary

In order to complete this course for HONORS SCIENCE credit, a student must cover more information than is done in the COLLEGE PREP version of the same course. The extra work will include covering supplemental material, being tested on the additional material, and completing additional work from the following five areas.

  • Additional Reading
  • Additional Writing (research paper)
  • Additional Projects to include an investigative experiment and an oral presentation.
  • One additional project chosen from a list provided by the teacher. Possible projects include: field trip with reflection paper, visual arts project, additional reading with a report, technology presentation, technology report, and life science career exploration with reflection essay.

Specific assignments and details for honors work will be provided by the teacher.
