2024-2025 School Year

Spanish 1 Honors GVL

Course Description

This Spanish 1 course will cover the basics of the Spanish language, with an emphasis on communicative skills (listening comprehension, reading, writing, and speaking). Cultural information is integrated into the lessons to provide students with an understanding of Spanish-speaking communities and countries. Specific topics covered include greetings, the alphabet and pronunciation, days of the week, months of the year, colors, describing yourself and others, discussing likes and dislikes, telling time, discussing your school schedule, school subjects and supplies, describing family members, foods and drinks, expressing wants and needs, shopping vocabulary, transportation and places in town, discussing your home, furniture and chores, as well as vocabulary related to sports, body parts, technology, and more. It is a fast-paced course designed to give you an overview of the most common vocabulary and basic grammar structures needed for everyday conversation.

To be successful in this class:

Active participation in class is crucial. To acquire a new language, you must process the Spanish you hear in class, listen, and repeat to practice pronunciation. Students must also complete regular homework assignments to reinforce what is covered in class. Typically, homework assignments cover the material presented in class, so it is important to follow carefully in class, participate, and ask questions when needed. Students should expect to spend 3-5 hours on average each week working on this course at home. This time will usually be spent completing homework assignments, doing a unit project or test, and reviewing the unit vocabulary words.
