Middle School Syllabus Guidelines

Format

  • Use a PDF or Google Docs to create your syllabus.
  • Use one font throughout your syllabus and limit it to two pages.
  • Use a clear title identical to the title used in our UHC Middle School Course Descriptions: Place “UHC” at the front of your syllabus title.
  • Feel free to make a copy of our syllabus template and add the required information.
  • Save your syllabus as a PDF for posting on JE Materials for the parents and students.

Content (Required)

  • List materials needed; please include hyperlinks when applicable (copy and paste from our course descriptions).
  • Explain how assignments will be given, posted, and graded; be sure to mention the assignments will be posted in JE Materials as well as the recording of grades.
  • Include the UHC Middle School Grading Policy.
  • Communicate your evaluation/testing procedure; review and share the UHC Testing Procedure
  • Provide grading scale and grade weighting; explain how students’ total grades will be calculated. Ask Karla for confirmation of the weighting policy for your subject area.
  • Make clear the importance of attendance and procedures for absences and tardies.
  • Give specifics on parent/student communication (ex: Jupiter Ed messages, JE files, utilizing instructional videos, quizzes, JE homework uploading, communicating tests, and where/when to find weekly updates if applicable.
    • You may include parameters for answering co-op student/parent communication on JE.
    • Reply to students/parents within 24 hours during the school week. UHC teachers are not required to answer questions about UHC coursework between 5 p.m. on Fridays and Monday mornings. Students with questions between these times should contact a friend as the assignment will still be due at the beginning of the class on Monday.

Content (Optional)

  • Include your bio material if desired and leave off your email address to ensure they do not use regular email to communicate with you. You are not required to share your phone number; JE communication is required for teachers, parents, and students.
  • Provide a schedule or list of chapters/topics covered throughout the year; details and dates are not necessary on the syllabus–instead use Week 1, Week 2, or Month 1, Fall Semester, etc so that your syllabus is “date generic” and can be used from year to year.
  • Cover rules that pertain to your class and/or co-op rules/guidelines that you feel are important to share. There are several important documents you may review and link in the UHC Family Handbook (Scroll down to the Middle School section).

Examples

  • World Geography for Middle School: Maddie explains how JE will be used for assignments and communication.
  • UHC IEW2 Syllabus: Tonya includes a list of topics covered for the year which is helpful for parents and record keeping.
  • Intro to Physics: Carolyn’s links specific materials needed for the class. It also links examples of other material options.
  • Intermediate Math Syllabus: Kara includes clear directions concerning summer homework.
  • General Science: Lynda includes links to important MS policies such as the late policy.
