Course Description

This is math for the eighth-grade student taught as preparation for Algebra 1.

*A strong 7th grader may take this course upon teacher recommendation and approval of a UHC administrator.

The curriculum is  from All Things Algebra and covers Real Numbers; Algebraic Expressions; Equations & Inequalities; Ratio, Proportions, & Percents; Functions & Linear Relationships; Systems of Equations; Geometry; Measurement (Area and Volume) and Probability & Statistics.

Note: August homework is assigned and required.

To be successful in this class:

Students should be involved in class discussions and practice problems in class. They should use their math workbook to take notes in class and complete homework 4-5 days a week, with roughly 20-30 problems assigned after each class. Tests will be an average of an hour. This class is fast-paced and requires dedication to daily homework and parent involvement.

Summer and Christmas Break homework will be assigned and is required.

Parents are required to use the answer key, review/reteach concepts on non-class days, and check and correct all practice sets.

Students may also be enrolled in a  Math Lab if additional help with homework is needed.

Additional Course Fees: $60 textbook fee

Prerequisites:

UHC Intermediate Math/ Math 7 or equivalent course

Required Materials

Textbooks:

Textbook fee will cover printed and bound workbooks (All Things Algebra) for students to use in class for notes and homework (1 per semester).

Note: Families will be required to print select pages to complete the required summer assignments.

Other materials:

  • Sharpened pencils with erasers
  • Calculator, scientific (teacher recommends this one HERE)
  • 2 thin-lined expo markers
  • Highlighters
