Dress Code

Students, staff, teachers, parent assistants, and guests on our campus must dress modestly and in accordance with their biological sex from birth at all times. The Co-op’s definition of “modesty” includes the following guidelines:

FEMALES:

  • Females may not dress in men’s apparel in a way that makes them look like a male at any time including on theme days and for class presentations or for any other reason or time while on the UHC campus or at any other UHC sponsored event off campus.
  • No strapless, halter, or spaghetti straps may be worn on campus.
  • No “attitude” shirts, which are shirts with inappropriate or divisive messages written on them, and no shirts with words that would make a younger student question their meaning.
  • Shorts may be worn only if the finished length comes down to or past the wearer’s finger-tips while standing in a relaxed position with arms hanging at sides.
  • Skirts or dresses may be worn only if they come down to or past the wearer’s fingertips while standing in a relaxed position with arms hanging at sides.  If worn with leggings they must follow the legging/yoga pant rule (below).
  • Legging/yoga pants may be worn ONLY if the shirt/skirt/dress worn with them completely covers the wearer’s bottom in the back and front at all times.
  • Dress pants, casual pants, jeans, and capris may be worn. If jeans are ripped, there may be no tears above the fingertips when a student is standing in a relaxed position with arms hanging at sides.
  • No shirts that have a neckline that shows cleavage.
  • No skin may be seen between the person’s pants and shirt at any time.
  • Shoes (of choice) must be worn; no roller blades, roller shoes (Heelys).

MALES:

  • Males may not dress in female apparel in a way that makes them look like a female at any time including on theme days and for class presentations or for any other reason or time while on the UHC campus or at any other UHC sponsored event off campus.
  • No undergarments should be seen between a student’s pants and shirt i.e. boxer shorts.
  • Shirts may be worn “un-tucked”
  • No sagging pants
  • Sports pants, shorts and jeans can be worn. If jeans are ripped, there may be no tears above the fingertips when a student is standing in a relaxed position with arms hanging at sides.
  • Shorts may be worn only if the finished length comes down to or past the wearer’s finger-tips while standing in a relaxed position.
  • No “attitude” shirts, which are shirts with inappropriate or divisive messages written on them, and no shirts with words that would make a younger student question their meaning.
  • T-shirts with appropriate slogans and sports logos may be worn.
  • Sleeveless shirts with normal size arm openings ok. No muscle shirts with larger than normal arm or neck holes.
  • No shirts with the sleeves and neck ripped or cut out to make these openings larger than a normal sleeveless shirt.
  • Shoes (of choice) must be worn; no roller blades, roller shoes (Heelys).

Student Dress Code Violation Policy

The Teacher or Director who sees an infraction can take the following steps:

  • pull the student aside privately and explain to them the dress code violation.
  • the teacher will send the student to the Director’s Office where a large shirt or pair of sweatpants will be given to cover the garment in violation of the dress-code.
  • the teacher will send a JE referral to parents and their Director.
  • the student will call a parent to have a dress-code compliant garment brought to them to wear for the rest of the day.
  • the student will return to class.
