2026-2027 School Year
IEW 1 Introductory Middle School Writing SPT
Tuesdays AND Thursdays
Introductory Middle School Writing
Course Description
This class will require daily parent supervision/teaching. We will be teaching with Structure and Style for Students: Year 1, Level B from IEW. Research has shown that if our students can write well by the end of middle school, they will be more successful in all areas of high school work. Since mastery of structure and style is the purpose of this course, use this program across your own curriculum to fit your child’s individual needs. Students will work through IEW’s Fix It!, Mowgli and Shere Khan, which will make up a complete grammar program.
To be successful in this class:
Students will work on IEW assignments each non-co-op weekday (60 min daily) in order to obtain mastery. Assignments will be given based on material presented in class. Students will read the checklist and actually check off all items for the assignment. The teaching parent will edit with the student, make sure the final copy is completed, and sign or initial the checklist. All compositions will be turned in as hard copies; printer capabilities are a requirement for this course. PARENTS: It is imperative that you know and understand the material presented in the seminar workbook referenced, TWSS.
Homework: Students should expect IEW homework assignments 3 days per week, including writing assignments and Fix It! Grammar homework supported by extra in class grammar instruction as well as during “Writer’s Workshop.”
If you know your child will miss a class, contact the teacher beforehand to make plans to work through the material with your student at home. Course content will be presented in class; however, you are the primary teacher!
