It is important to identify students who are struggling academically and touch base with parents accordingly. With that in mind, if you have not already reached out to parents whose students are struggling in your class, make sure to do so while there is still time to help a student recover academically for the semester.

➡️ Start with #1 if you’ve never reached out, and then proceed to #2 the following week for  students who are failing your class.

➡️ If you’ve already notified parents of academic concerns this semester, and the student is failing your class, go right to #2, and leave a brief note in the comment section.

1. JE Message: Send a “Parent Contact” in the JE log system to parents whose students have a D or F to make sure they are aware of low grades/missing assignments to express your concern, offer input/ideas, ask for ways to help support them, and remind them there are a few weeks left this semester to pull up grades! Be sure to select “notify parent,” “notify student” and refer to MS Director.
2. Academic Referral: If you have already sent a JE “Parent Contact” to alert the parent of your concern, and the student continues to struggle, it is time to first consult with your director and upon director approval send an “Academic Referral” through the JE log system for those who have an F (failing) in your class. Please leave a brief comment. *Forward or Copy/Paste to send Karla and Whitney/Aaron, Lynda, or Missy with all further correspondence or threads pertaining to the contact/referral. Make sure to select “Notify Parents” and select “Middle School Director” on the referrals.

As far as including students in the messages/referrals,  7th/8th graders could be included and even some 6th graders. Consult with a director before including a student in an academic referral.
