K5-2nd Special Needs Class- SPT

Students meet for a full school year, with 12 co-op weeks in the fall and 12 weeks in the spring for a total of 24 weeks.  This class will meet twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  The K5-2nd Grade Special Needs class is a multi-age class for students in K5-2nd grades and will have one teacher, one consistent aide, and a parent assistant in the class for a adult student ratio of 3:10.  The students will enjoy recess twice a day at either the playground or the gym.  Parents must pack snack and lunch for their student. The students in this class will not be assigned homework and formal grades will not be given for this class.

Course Description

This class will be a self contained special needs setting with one teacher, one consistent aide, and one parent assistant to maintain a 3:10 adult to student ratio.  This class will cover topics such as: science, history/geography, literature, adaptive skills, and social skills.  Additionally, the class will go to recess twice a day.  The class will be housed on our Spartanburg campus only.  Our other UHC campuses are not able to offer this class currently.

For each content area listed below, please note that these content areas will be taught on a 3 year rotation so that if students are enrolled in the class for K5, 1st, and 2nd grades they will receive different instruction each year.

  • Science–  Science will be taught using the Answers in Genesis- God’s Design Beginners series.  Science lessons will be taught in a variety of methods and will include whole group instruction, small group instruction, hands on activities, and interactive videos.
  • History/Geography– History and geography will be taught using the Notgrass- Our Star Spangled Story- Part 1 and Part 2 and Our 50 States curriculum.  History and geography lessons will be taught in a variety of methods and will include whole group instruction, small group instruction, hands on activities, and interactive videos.
  • Literature– quality literature will be read and crafts and literacy activities will be taught in conjunction with the books read each week.
  • Adaptive/Social Skills– students will be given direct instruction, modeling, and guided practice opportunities in adaptive and social skills as appropriate to their age and development.

 

Grades: K5, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade

Fees: Two Day Model Tuition: $1300 for the year

Plus the following fees:
-$140 enrollment fee per child
-$70 security fee per family
-$85 Elementary Learning Differences Fee
-$10 per student portrait/bag tag fee

Prerequisites:

  • Students in K5 must be 5 years old by September 1st.
  • Students in 1st grade must be 6 years old by September 1st.
  • Students in 2nd grade must be 7 years old by September 1st.
  • Parents of students in this class must agree to serve at least half (5 out of 10) of their parent service days in this classroom.
  • To be enrolled in the class, the parent must provide testing/evaluations documenting their student’s diagnosis/disability.
  • Before enrolling in the class, parents must fill out the Learning Differences Form and set up a consultation with the Learning Differences Administrator to discuss if this class is an appropriate placement for their student.
  • Arrival/Dismissal- parents must park and walk in to drop off and pick up.  Students may not be in the carline holding room area.
  • All students will be given a behavioral support plan.
  • Parents will be required to sign a Learning Differences contract upon enrollment.
  • Students must be potty trained and able to use the restroom mostly independently.
  • Students must be able to communicate and follow 1-2 step directions.
