Course Description

This unique half-credit course is designed to help students develop leadership, teamwork, resilience, problem-solving, and outdoor living skills through a combination of workshops and a culminating wilderness/team building experience. Students will learn practical skills such as hiking preparation, navigation, wilderness first aid and safety, and outdoor stewardship while building confidence and character alongside their peers.

As our nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of our independence, this course offers students an opportunity to reflect on many of the qualities that shaped our nation’s founders and early pioneers. Courage, perseverance, personal responsibility, sound judgment, and servant leadership were essential to those who built and defended our country, and these same character traits remain just as valuable today. Through outdoor challenges and shared experiences, students will have the opportunity to develop these timeless leadership skills while gaining a deeper appreciation for the resilience and determination that have helped define our nation for 250 years.

The course will culminate in a 3.5-day, 3-night yurt village and hiking adventure from October 8–11, featuring team-building activities, ropes courses, environmental education, and leadership challenges.

To be successful in this class:

To earn one-half high school credit, students will be expected to:

• Attend and actively participate in all workshops
• Attend and participate in the 3.5 day, 3 night Wilderness Expedition
• Successfully complete workshop quizzes
• Participate fully in leadership and team-building activities
• Complete assigned responsibilities during the expedition
• Submit written reflections following the experience

 

Grades: 9th Grade, 10th Grade, 11th Grade, 12th Grade
